Justification in Depth
Romans 3:28
Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

Define and discuss justification, the battle cry of the Reformation
One of the historical controversies within the Protestant church has been the question of what appears to be justification by works in James conflicting with Paul's justification by faith argument for salvation. It is clear from Romans 4 that James and Paul are on the same page. James writes to a church of believers, urging them to put their faith into action, much in the same manner as Abraham. Paul tells us to do the same thing. Consider:
- Ephesians 4:12 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
- 1 Timothy 5:10 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
Other Scripture on the issue of good works being a sign of one’s faith include: 1 Timothy 2:10 & 6:18; Hebrews 10:24; James 2:14, 18, 20, 26 & 3:13; 1 Peter 2:12; and Revelation 2:2, 19.
